    EXO-L FAQ

    • Who is the EXO-L suitable for?

The EXO-L Ankle Brace was primarily designed to prevent ankle twists in recreational and professional athletes. Other groups with ankle problems can benefit from it as well. To name a few: adults and children who have suffered multiple ankle sprains (and therefore have a high chance of recurrence), people with chronic ankle instability, people with foot or ankle weakness which makes them prone to sprains, people who are unstable on their feet and are worried about twisting their ankles. The medical version EXO-L UP is the #1 solution for patients with foot drop.

    • Where can I get a 3D scan?

Go to the 3D scanning page.

    • Where can I go to have the patch attached to my shoe?

      Go to the shoemaker page.

    • Is EXO-L expensive?

In the long run EXO-L will save you money, because EXO-L has a much longer durability than other ankle protection devices. Your EXO-L is 3D modeled & 3D printed especially for you. Custom-made products typically are more expensive than standard products.

Visit the web shop to find out the price of your EXO-L.

    • Why do medical professionals get a discount?

We sell EXO-L at a reduced price to physiotherapists, podiatrists, medical doctors and distributors. This is to express our appreciation for the service and support they provide to you.

    • How is the EXO-L Ankle Brace custom-made?

First, a 3D scan of your foot and ankle is made to ensure a perfect fit. The 3D scan is converted into file for the 3D printer. The 3D printer prints your brace, which is then assembled with medical padding and a strap. You will also receive a patch. Visit a shoemaker to have the patch attached to your shoe.

    • How can the EXO-L be so slim when other braces are so voluminous?

Traditional ankle braces are based on the limitation of movement. They try to fixate the joint by limiting the side-to-side ankle movement as well as other planes of movement. The EXO-L brace doesn’t seek to limit movement – in fact it lets your ankle move naturally and freely – until the moment that it’s about to sprain. This very specific and targeted function is why this brace can be so slim. It all comes down to a fit-for-purpose design paired with some state-of-the-art innovation.

    • How often should I wear the brace?

Discuss this with your medical professional because it will be unique to you. If you’re an athlete, whether it’s recreational or professional, it is logical to wear your EXO-L whenever you’re playing sports or training. If going for a walk causes you to feel unstable, it is advisable to wear your brace during these walks and/or through the day. Any time you’re wearing your brace, you eliminate the risk of ankle sprains, so wear it whenever you feel you’re at risk.

    • What kind of shoes should I be wearing with EXO-L?

The EXO-L Ankle Brace is attached to your shoe via a cord and a patch. Use supportive shoes that you will wear most during the activity that puts you at risk of ankle sprains – like good sports shoes or walking shoes.

EXO-L doesn’t work with high top shoes. In order for the brace to function properly, the malleoli – the bony protuberances on either side of the ankle – must be uncovered. Furthermore, high top shoes have been debunked for their ankle sprain prevention effect: this is close to zero. Shoes with hard plastic parts on the sides don’t work either – it will be impossible to sew the EXO-L patch to the shoe.

    • I didn’t wear my EXO-L and sprained my ankle. Should I keep wearing my brace or leave it off during recovery?

Always take the right measurements to recover from your injury. If your EXO-L still fits and you are not experiencing any extra pain, it is good to keep using it. Wearing your brace through your recovery will help reduce the likelihood of another sprain, which could significantly set back your recovery and lead to greater damage to your ankle ligaments.

    • How quickly do I get my brace?

As your EXO-L is custom-made, it takes some time to manufacture. Please allow approximately four weeks for your EXO-L be designed, printed and shipped.

    • Does the brace come in a colour other than grey?

Yes, you can choose to personalise your brace. EXO-L is available in multiple colours.

    • I don’t play a lot of sports, is the EXO-L still right for me?

Yes, especially if you have weak or instable ankles. You don’t need to be playing a sport to sprain your ankle. It can happen to anybody at any time. Many people use their EXO-L to simply support their ankles through everyday life

    • I have foot drop and weak ankles, is EXO-L right for me?

The EXO-L is designed to prevent ankle sprains – but the EXO-L UP is specifically  designed for foot drop and can definitely help you.

    • Is the EXO-L brace covered by my health insurance?

The current situation is that it varies. When EXO-L is work-related, it is fully covered. When it is sports or leisure related, it is not or only partly covered. We recommend checking with your insurance company. Query them as to whether they cover ‘orthotics’.

    • Is EXO-L associated with the Olympics?

There is no official connection, but at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics 27 players wore an EXO-L Ankle Brace. Some of these athletes are true ambassadors of EXO-L, stating that without EXO-L they would never have come this far. Some also won Gold or Silver Medals.
