    5 reasons why

How to prevent ankle twist injuries in rugby?

Ankle twists are common in rugby due to the high-intensity nature of the sport. Taping and standard ankle braces do not provide enough protection to prevent this type of injury. The unique EXO-L Ankle Brace does! It gives you more than 95% protection from ankle sprains. And what’s more: it doesn’t negatively impact your performance.

Rugby is pre-eminently a physical sport. The fast-paced nature of the game, the constant physical contact and unpredictable field conditions make players prone to ankle twists. Quick direction changes and sudden stops put excessive strain on the ankle ligaments. Tackling, rucking and mauling situations can also cause ankle injuries. Then there’s the often uneven and muddy surface of the field, which creates unstable footing.

Sprained ankles are common in rugby

So it’s no surprise that ankle twists are common injuries in rugby. It can happen to best of us. Even top players like Dan Carter, Jonny Wilkinson*, David Pocock, Richie McCaw and Sam Warburton have had their fair share of ankle twists throughout their careers, and had to cope with pain, performance loss and lost days.

*) Due to a non-contact ankle injury sustained in training, Wilkinson missed the first two matches of the 2007 World Cup.

Increased risk of recurring ankle sprain

To make matters worse: a previous ankle sprain injury significantly increases the likelihood of experiencing a recurrent ankle sprain. After the first injury the ankle does not fully regain its original strength, making it more susceptible to future injuries.

It’s important to always wear ankle protection. What kind of protection is most effective?

Taping and standard ankle braces hinder your performance

How about taping the ankle or using standard ankle braces? They are not the answer either. Taping is done by many players, but is also least effective. After about 20 minutes the stretch of the material and the impact of released body fluids diminish its effectiveness. Furthermore:

    • Taping and standard ankle braces have a negative impact on your playing performance, according to research. They hinder your ability to perform quick directional changes.
    • Taping and standard braces decrease your jump height.
    • Taping and standard braces lower your agility in reversal moves.

The best ankle brace to prevent ankle injuries in rugby is the EXO-L

The EXO-L Ankle Brace decreases the risk of an ankle twist by more than 95%. EXO-L is a unique, patented, customised ankle brace with unparalleled protection.

Where a standard ankle brace works based on the limitation of your ankle movement, EXO-L works like a car safety belt: it only springs into action when you are in danger of spraining your ankle.

EXO-L does not limit your movement. In fact, you do not really notice wearing it. It makes your ankle stronger and improves performance, without pain or abrasions.

Wearing an EXO-L has no impact on ball contact. From a protection perspective, the EXO-L ankle brace is an addition to your shin guard and protects your ankle bones as well as your Achilles’ heel from external impacts.
